When a home sits on a slope near water, erosion is not just an eyesore - it's an ongoing problem. Soil washes away, access gets muddy and uneven, and the area around the foundation starts to look rough. That's exactly the situation we were working with here. The goal was simple: stop the erosion, clean up the space, and make it easier to actually get around the property.
Rip rap is one of the best tools for this kind of work. The rounded stone locks together naturally, sheds water without letting soil move underneath it, and holds up long-term without a lot of maintenance. We used it to cover the slope running along the side of the home, giving the grade somewhere to shed water without pulling the ground apart every time it rains.
We also set stone steps from the yard level up to the home's entry. It sounds straightforward, but getting the footing right matters a lot - steps that aren't properly supported shift and settle fast. These were set solid, with the rip rap surrounding them to keep everything stable and tied together visually.
The site prep side of this job was just as important as the stone work. Grading the area correctly, getting the soil prepped, and making sure the drainage moved the right direction - all of that happens before the first rock goes down. It's the part most people don't see, but it's what makes the finished result last.
What we ended up with is a yard that actually functions. Clean access to the front door, erosion under control along the slope, and a finished look that fits the property well. That combination - practical and good-looking - is what we're always going for.
